Please join us at The Baldpate Inn (located seven miles south of Estes Park, CO along Highway 7) TONIGHT, June 10, at 7PM for what promises to be a fascinating discussion on the historic postcard collection of Harold Sanborn.
The discussion will be led by John Meissner of Estes Park Archives and will focus on how to capture Sanborn's work, which nearly three decades beginning in the 1920s.
In short, Sanborn took more than 2,000 black-and-white as well as sepia-toned landscape photographs of Colorado and Wyoming, which he later turned into postcards or simply kept for personal use.
The question remains, however, of how does one turn these inspirations into a complete portfolio of work or an entire collection for display to the public?

2015 Summer Enchanted Evenings Press
The Baldpate Inn
is honored to announce a fascinating Summer Enchanted Evening on Wednesday,
June 10th at 7 PM in the Baldpate Key Room for our talk with
John Meissner
Harold Sanborn
criss-crossed Colorado and Wyoming for three decades beginning in 1922, taking
thousands of photographs which he turned into souvenir postcards. In the
Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park alone, almost 2000 different black
and white images bear the Harold Sanborn signature, and others lacking a
signature resemble Sanborn's work.
Suppose someone wanted to
assemble one of each of these Sanborn real-photo postcards. Would the
limiting factor in assembling a complete set be the expense (Sanborn postcards
of beloved early lodges and downtown businesses routinely sell for $50 and up),
or would it be a numbers game - the fact that some of the views were produced
in such low numbers initially, and are unlikely to survive today? How
would one even get a handle on how many total postcards were out there to look
for, so that a set could truly be judged "complete"?
John Meissner, spokesperson
for the Estes Park Archives, will talk at the Baldpate Inn on Highway 7 this
Wednesday, June 10, on his quest to generate a list of the so-called
"R" series of Sanborn postcards, those related in a loosely-defined
way to the environs surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park.
This free program,
beginning at 7:00 p.m., kicks off this year's installment of the Baldpate's
Summer Enchanted Evening series, an attempt to recreate the campfire talks that
were such a part of the early Estes Park tourist experience. Local
historians and naturalists will lecture on a variety of topics every Wednesday
through the end of September. .
