Soups & Muffins- Monday, June 29th

Good Morning!

It's a wonderful day here at The Baldpate Inn! Looking down into the valley we can see the that the sun is warming it up with its golden rays while a slight breeze sends the Aspen leaves into a bit of a frenzy and the hummingbirds dance against another blue cloud-free sky!

Today our fine chefs are busy back in the kitchen preparing two tasty soups for your dining pleasure: Red Chili (featured in our 2008 Legacy Edition Collections cookbook) and Broccoli Cheese (vegetarian). Remember to try a slice of homemade Honey Wheat Bread with a bowl or two of our delicious soup. If you love our mouth-watering Baldpate Corn Bread-you are in luck as we will be serving it today as well. Our sweet Lily's Lemon Blueberry Muffins (story behind the name can be found in our cookbook) along with the savory All Bran Muffins are sure to tantalize your taste buds! Don't forget to save room for a slice of Cherry-Rhubarb or Chocolate pie (these are some of my favorites)! If you're too full-you can take it with you.

We would love for you to join us today anytime between 11:30am and 8:00pm. I would always recommend reservations as the season is rapidly bringing in more and more guests. You can make reservations by visiting our website or calling us toll-free at 866-577-5397. Learn more about us by visiting our website http://www.baldpateinn.com/ Feeling too full after you wonderful meal? Take a stroll around Lily Lake just up our driveway and across the highway. The ducks have been out in full swing for awhile now.

After poking around the kitchen I finally uncovered what soups our chefs are pondering about making tomorrow: Beef Stew and Cream of Asaragus

Life is a great and wondrous mystery, and the only thing we know that we have for sure is what is right here right now. Don't miss it. ~Leo Buscaglia

Good Morning Estes Park,

Cory Meza here holding down the front desk. It’s going to be another great day in Estes Park, and with a lower chance of rain than yesterday. The high is only going to be around 70 today so remember to bring that jacket if you are going to be gaining some elevation in the park today. After my morning shift here, I’ll be off to Castle Rock, a rock spire on the edge of Spruce Lake, it’s about 5miles from the Bear Lake Trail Head, but the elevation gain is spread out so the hike is challenging but not overly so. Another recommendation I would say is Sky Pond, which sits at the base of Hallett peak.
Hiking always works up an appetite so once you’re done, come on by the Baldpate for some lunch or dinner. We always recommend reservations because the season is getting into full swing here in Estes, and you can get a reservation either online at http://www.baldpateinn.com/dining.asp or by calling us at 970-586-5397.
Here is what we are serving today:
Soups: White Chili- a lighter version of the classic southwestern dish
Tomato Rice- a delicious tomato soup made better with rice to soak up all the tomato
Goodness
Muffins: Classic Blueberry- The Baldpate Inn’s blueberry muffins…enough said
Chocolate Mystery- Can you guess the secret ingredient to one of our signature dishes?
I got kicked out of the kitchen today before I could hear the second soup we’ll be serving tomorrow, so you know it’s going to be good. I did hear that we are going to be serving our famous Cowboy Buffalo soup tomorrow.

Have a Blessed Day in Estes Park,
Cory Meza

Good Morning Estes Park,

Cory Meza here manning the Front Desk. Looking out over the porch you can see the sun hitting Estes and man does it look like a good day on the way. It’s supposed to hit the low 70s today which is perfect hiking weather, I myself will be attempting to summit Thatchtop Mountain over in Glacier Gorge. If you are looking for something less challenging as that, I suggest either Sandbeach Lake, down in the Wild Basin area, or Bridal Veil Falls over by McGregor Ranch.
It’s supposed to rain this afternoon so get the hike done earlier and come over and reward yourself with lunch or dinner at The Baldpate Inn. Or you can come in and wish our server Erik a Happy 23rd Birthday. Call us at 970-586-6151 or go online and visit our dining page, http://www.baldpateinn.com/dining.asp , to reserve a table online.
Today’s line-up of specialties is a good one:
Soups: Red Chili, a classic that goes great with a slice of homemade Cornbread and a splash of
Tabasco.
Potato Leek, a staff favorite here that is amazing with a couple pieces of Bacon and
Cheese.

Muffins: Lemon Blueberry, a delicious blueberry muffin given a zing of lemon zest
Zucchini Nut, another dish from The Baldpate Inn that has become a local favorite

I have been snooping around the kitchen this morning listening to the chefs talk and I believe that tomorrow’s soups are going to be White Chili and Tomato Rice.

Have a blessed day in the most Beautiful place on the Earth,

Cory Meza

We have been blessed with another spectacular morning. Thanks again to everyone involved in last nights Summer Enchanted Evening. If you have not made it up here for one of these events I strongly suggest it to anyone looking for interesting information about the Estes Park area.

I am now getting my information from a new source and I am told that tomorrow we should be serving our Red Chili and Potato Leek.

We hope you will join us for Lunch or Dinner. For reservations call 970-586-5397 or visit our website at http://www.baldpateinn.com/dining.asp and reserve a table online.

Good Morning From The Baldpate Inn!

Come join us for dinner before or relax on the patio with a piece of homemade pie!

Good Morning All!

After last night's rain and thunderstorms, we are delighted to have such a wonderful morning brewing at the Baldpate. From the front desk I can see the sun shining over Lily Mountain and a gentle breeze is blowing in from over the hillside. Many a hummingbird are dancing happily around their sugary feeders and if I had to guess I would say that they are commenting on the beautiful day amongst themselves as well.

Today we will be serving our yummy Cowboy Buffalo Stew as well as our delectable Pumpkin Curry. To complement our soups we have our moist Green Onion Cream Cheese and All Bran Muffins as well. Also, don't forget to try our one-of-a-kind Cornbread because it is definitely something to write home about.

If you are planning to take advantage of the fabulous weather, please stop by the Baldpate while you are out and about. One of our chefs, Stephanie, is turning a year older today so be sure to wish her a happy birthday if you come out for lunch or dinner. As always, reservations are recommended and you can find us at our website or give us a call at 970.586.keys.

The rumor for tomorrow is that we will be having White Chili and Garden Vegetable soups before our Summer Enchanted Evenings series in the library. This week's topic is going to be all about Cliff Higby, the father of Estes Park. If you haven't been out to one of these Wednesday night events, I strongly suggest that you do so. As always the event is free and open to the public and complementary refreshments will be served. Come on out and take a bite out of history as well as some delicious homemade cookies.

Thanks for reading loyal Baldpaters!

Good Morning Estes Park,

Cory Meza here at the Front Desk writing the blog this morning. Hope all the families out there enjoyed a gorgeous Father’s day. It’s already looking like another winner of a day here, the sun is shining and the hummingbirds are already out and about. If you are looking for somewhere to go out and about, I suggest hiking up to Bridal Veil Falls, which is located about 3.5miles from the Cow Trail Trailhead right off McGregor Ranch Rd.
If your wanderings bring you closer to Lilly Lake or Highway 7, look right across the road for our sign with the American Flag waving above it. We’re located about 7 miles outside town on highway 7 going south, and we’d love for you to join us for either lunch, which starts at 11:30am, or dinner. The season is really picking up so we always recommend you call ahead and make a reservation. You can reach us either by calling 970-586-6151 or going online through the dining page on our website, http://www.baldpateinn.com/dining.asp.
Our Soups of the Day are Red Chili and Cream of Mushroom soup. For the Red Chili, I would recommend adding a slice of cornbread into it and a couple splashes of Tabasco.
The delicious muffins we are serving today are our Banana Butterscotch Muffin, possibly the best muffin ever, and the savory yet sweet Zucchini Dill.
By the looks of the morning deliveries and the talk amongst the chefs, I would definitely say that tomorrow’s soups are going to be Cowboy Buffalo Stew and Pumpkin Curry.

We look forward to seeing you, have a lovely day.

Happy Fathers Day!

• "Small boy's definition of Father's Day: It's just like Mother's Day only you don't spend so much." -- Unknown

• "A father is a guy who has snapshots in his wallet where his money used to be."
-- Unknown

Good Morning All!

Well, I don't think that the Dads out there could have asked for a nicer day to go golfing, fishing, or to simply have the remote control all to themselves. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In addition to being Father's Day, it is also the last day of our Summer in the Keys promotion out at the Baldpate. Today is Solstice Sunday and we are celebrating by having party size offerings of Key Lime and Coconut pie 4 you, 4 summer, for 4 dollars. So after you have had some Beef Stew and Tomato Rice Soup, as well as, Zucchini Nut and Triple Cheese Muffins, be sure to finish up with one of our tropical slices of pie!

Thanks for reading!

Wednesday, June 17th

Good Morning Everyone,

It looks to be a gorgeous day in Estes Park with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. Today we will be holding the third session of our Summer Enchanted Evenings series. Tonight’s topic will be “The Hard Way to Estes Park.” The discussion will begin at 7:00 PM in our library, located off of our world-famous key room. These sessions are free to attend and do not require an RSVP.

Today’s soups include White Chili and Broccoli Cheese. Muffins will be Chocolate Mystery and Onion Garlic. Stop by and play the guessing game with your server to see if you can discover the mystery in the Chocolate Mystery muffins. If can’t seem to find any luck guessing this mystery ingredient, you can always opt for the easier route and purchase our cookbook which contains the full recipe.

The cooks also tell me that soups for tomorrow will be Cowboy Buffalo Stew and Corn Chowder.

Reservations are highly recommended as we continue to get busier with summer in full swing. Reservations can be made either by phone at 970-586-KEYS (5397) or on our website at http://www.baldpateinn.com/.

We hope you'll join us for lunch or dinner today and enjoy the beautiful views of Estes Valley that the Baldpate Inn has to offer.

Take care,

Eric Knapke

Summer Enchanted Evening!

The new Baldpate Inn series Summer Enchanted Evening has been crowded for the past two weeks!! Wednesday will be our third program “The Hard Way to Estes Park.” So stop on by and see what it’s all about!

Here is a little information about the program to get you thinking! Originally the only way to get to Estes Park from Loveland was by foot, horseback or go to Lyons and take stagecoach. In 1875 a petition was presented to the county commissioners asking that the Bald Mountain Road be extended to Pole Hill then Estes Park. The road came out of Loveland on First Street, up and over Bald Mountain through Rattlesnake Park up to Pole Hill then down through what is now the Crocker Ranch to Estes. It was a climb of over 3,000 feet to the top and then down 1,000 feet to Estes. That was pretty hard for horses (and a bicyclist) so eventually a road was cut through the Big Thompson Narrows to Estes Park in 1905.

See you in the Baldpate Inn library, Wednesday, June 17 at 7 PM. Enjoy cookies, juice, coffee or maybe glass of wine!

For information visit http://wwwestesparkarchives.com/

Sincerely,

Laura Franklin

Good Morning and Good Day!

It's another lovely day here at the Baldpate where the soup is kept hot, the salads chilled, and a warm greeting of friendship is always included with your visit. Before I get to our soups and muffins of the day, I would like to leave you with a few facts about hummingbirds, which seem to be in abundance at the Baldpate.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that have the ability to move forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways, or sit in sheer space.

Hummingbirds may visit up to 1000 flowers a day in their continuous search for food.
Hummingbirds' hearts beat an average of 1,260 beats per minute.

And hummingbirds love the Baldpate!

So come out and see are feathered friends in action as you have lunch or dinner on our sun porch or enjoy a glass of wine and some dessert on our deck. Our soups today are going to be our Tomato Rice and our Beef Stew. Muffins of the day are Buttermilk Bran and Oatmeal Blues.

After bugging the cooks for half an hour I was told that tomorrow's soups will be Broccoli Cheese and White Chili! In addition, come on out tomorrow night for the weekly Summer Enchanted Evenings educational series. This weeks topic is going to be "The Hard Way to Estes Park." As always, cookies, punch, tea, and coffee will be served as refreshments.
Have a blessed day!
Sincerely,
Katie Emard

Be at home with the Baldpate

Morning All!

It's another wonderful day out at the Baldpate where our guests' comfort is always first on our minds! This morning I would like to share with you a little poem that is written on a plaque at our front desk. It goes like this:

Guest, you are welcome here
be at your ease...
Get up when you're ready,
go to bed when you please,
happy to share with
you such as we've got,
the leaks in the roof
and the soup in the pot.
You don't have to thank
us or laugh at our jokes,
sit deep and come often,
you're one of the folks.

So with that being said, come join us out at the Baldpate where we are always ready to share with you our delicious soups and homemade muffins. Today for example we are going to be having our Cream of Asparagus and our Red Chili, along with, Zucchini Nut and Mandarin Orange muffins. If you have never been out to the Baldpate before, please stop in and say hello. We promise we will do our best to make you feel at home and I encourage you to grab a book from our library, curl up on one of our couches with a cup of coffee, and relax in front of our fire.

In case you can't make it out today, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Tomorrow's soups are going to be Broccoli Cheese and our yummy beef stew.

Once again, thanks for reading loyal Baldpaters! Please come join us and if you know what time your belly will be grumbling today, call us for reservations at 970-586-6151 or visit us at http://www.opentable.com/. Oh what a beautiful morning we have stewing out at the Baldpate! The sun is shining bright and the mountains are clear for hiking and climbing. If you haven’t been out to Lily Lake or tackled Twin Sisters, then today is the perfect day to do so.

Also, going on in town today is the annual Wool Festival. I have read that the festival is happening in order to raise awareness and promote the use of natural fibers. Among the many activities going on, I am most excited about llama limbo! I hope I get a chance to go to town, check out the festival, and learn a little more about the use of wool in everyday living.

After you visit the llamas or do some hiking, come on out to the Baldpate were we are going to be having our kicking Pumpkin Curry soup along with our ever-popular Beef Stew. Our muffins are going to be tangy Lemon Ginger and yummy Apple Raisin Spice. And what would Beef Stew be without our buttermilk bran muffins? Be careful however those tasty little guys are prone to seconds, and thirds, and fourths, and…. well you get the picture!

Sshhh…. don’t tell, but after a lot of snooping around in the kitchen I believe I have discovered that tomorrows soups are going to be Garden Vegetable and Cowboy Buffalo Stew, so be sure to come out and visit us. For reservations, give us a call at 970-586-6151 or visit us at http://www.opentable.com/.

As always we welcome you to come share the special charm that is the Baldpate Inn!

Sincerely,

Good Morning Estes Park,

Cory Meza back at the Front Desk this morning hoping you all have a lovely day. I just want to extend a quick thanks to everyone that came to the second part of our Summer Enchanted Evenings series last night, thanks to our speaker and guests.
Another trail recommendation from one hiker to another, Spruce lake trail. It’s about 4.6miles one way, and if you are feeling adventurous, bushwhack your way to the summit of Castle Rock on the western side of the lake.

Now for the real purpose of this piece.
Soups: Red Chili: beef, tomatoes and spice make for a great classic dish, this pairs well
with our Snowy Peaks Merlot.

Corn Chowder: think liquid cornbread, my personal taste, add another piece of
Cornbread to the soup, mash it up, and add some cheese and Tabasco. Try this one with our Snowy Peaks Riesling.

Muffins: Cranberry Nut: Making it’s debut today, Cranberries and Pecans make for a
exceptional treat.

Zucchini Dill: Featured in Bon Appetit Magazine.

Now it took me all morning to get this from the owner herself, and Lois tells me that tomorrow we’ll be serving Beef Stew and Pumpkin Curry soup.
If your travels take you by Lily Lake today, just cross the road and follow our driveway. Feel Free to call us at 970-586-5397 and make a reservation. We look forward to seeing you, happy travels.

Good Morning Estes Park,

Greetings from the Front Desk, Cory Meza in charge and excited to be back writing the blog. If you are in Estes Park looking to venture into Rocky Mountain National Park for some hiking, I highly recommend Deer Mountain, it’s a 6 mile round trip, but the views from the summit, especially if you are ambitious and get there right after sunrise, are amazing. It’s been a lovely start to the season with the rest of the summer only looking better still. We’re located just left of Lilly Lake on Highway 7; call us at 970-586-6151 to make a reservation. We’d love for all of you to come visit The Baldpate Inn and experience the charm that puts above the rest; the elevation helps also.
Soups:
Beef Stew: a traditional stew made with chunks of real beef in a hearty broth with vegetables
Potato Leek: potatoes and leeks blended together to form a rich and slightly creamy texture, add a slice of cornbread and a couple splashes of Tabasco, and you’ve got a meal
Muffin:
Buttermilk Bran- a savory combination of good wholesome bran made with buttermilk
Golden Sunshine: Bits of Orange and Raisins in one muffin make this a delicious treat
Trail Mix: Nuts and Berries and all the trappings of a bag of trail mix made into a muffin
Looking towards tomorrow, I would say our soups are going to be Red Chili and Corn Chowder.

Baldpate Inn Events 2009

In addition to Katie’s blog, this is Emily Coffman from New Mexico State University. I am one of our Event planners for the season and wanted to give you the update on special events happening at the Baldpate! So set your calendars because we have lots of exciting events in store this season!

We host speakers at Summer Enchanted Evening every Wednesday at 7pm in our library. Last week’s program was a huge success and we hope to see everyone again tomorrow!
The speaker will be Sybil Barnes, a history detective and resident of Estes Park for more than 50 years! Her program will cover an overview of changes to the local landscape, tips on identifying the locations of historic photos, and a discussion of the “essential” books about Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Remember this event is free and we welcome you to bring your own post cards, photos or memories to spark more discussion! Hope to see you there and feel free to join us for dinner beforehand to make an evening of it!

This summer is going to be full of things to do including:

Oh, What A Morning!

Good morning all!

If you haven’t been out to see us yet this season then today is the perfect day to do so. The sun is shining down on the Aspens and the Rockies have never looked so beautiful out of our sun porch windows. In the words of Julie Andrews, “The hills are alive with the sound of Music!” So if you are planning on being out our way fishing at Lily Lake or Hiking in the park, give us a call at 970-586-6151. We accept walk-ins, but reservations are recommended. Also look us up online at www.opentable.com. We would just love to see you while you are out and about this afternoon or evening; the hummingbirds are happily dancing in their bird feeders and can’t wait for an audience!

Our soups of the day are:
Cowboy Buffalo Stew- hearty and delicious any time of the year and Tomato Rice- a soup with a kick of flavor sure to wake up your taste buds!

Muffins of the day are:
Banana Butterscotch- sweet and fruity, a combination that never gets old and Triple Cheese- a delicious mix of cheeses and ingredients that will knock your socks off.

After nosing around in the kitchen I am feeling confident that tomorrows soups will be two of our most popular favorites, Potato Leek and Beef Stew. What a winning Wednesday combination!

Also today a member of our staff, Jamie, is celebrating her 21st birthday today! Come on out and wish her a Happy Birthday and many more!

Thanks!

The End Of The Employee Scavenger Hunt

Good Morning all!

Today marks the end of the Baldpate Staff’s annual scavenger hunt. We were required to visit businesses and places of interest all over Estes Park in order to complete a very detailed list of questions. Part of the purpose of the hunt is to allow many of us “out of towners” to familiarize ourselves with our surroundings so that we might be able to better assist our guests during their visit. Even more than learning about the very intriguing history of the town, I was able to meet some great people along the way! So from our very own scavenger hunt I bring you a few questions to test your very own Estes Park knowledge.

At Lake Estes what is the Tiger Muskie Regulation?

What was the age of the oldest person to go rafting with Rapid Transit?

What is the brand new flavor of ice cream at the 14ers café?

How many children did Joel Estes have?

Don’t worry if you didn’t know the answers off the top of your head. The scavenger hunt took my teammates and I several hours of driving around and questioning locals to figure out, but I really do feel connected to the town now and am proud to say I know exactly how to find my way to the Taffy Shop!

Now to get to the heart of the blog, here are our specialties of the day:

Soups- Pumpkin Curry and Beef Stew

Muffins- Zucchini Dill and Blueberry

And after a fair amount of snooping in the kitchen I believe that tomorrow’s soups have a good chance of being Red Chili and Broccoli Cheese.

Please come out and join us at the Baldpate today and be sure to ask your server for any funny stories that might have happened to them while they were out scavenging! Call us at 970-586-6151 if you would like to make a reservation for Sunday dinner, or visit us on the web at http://www.baldpateinn.com/.

Have a great day!

Good Morning Estes Park,

It’s another glorious day up here in Estes Park, it’s a bit on the chilly side so you may want to pack that jacket if you are going to be out about town. It’s going to warm up to the mid-60s today, but if the afternoon rain showers chase you off the trail come on by, we’re located on Highway 7 right across from Lily Lake. The summer season is picking up steam so we’re encouraging reservations more than ever. Give us a call at 970-586-5397 or go online through our website www.baldpateinn.com/dining.asp .

We’ve got the perfect food to warm the body up after a long day of hiking or whatever activities you might be into.

Soups: Red Chili- a classic dish, ground beef, tomatoes, and the right amount of spice
Corn Chowder- right now this dish is my personal favorite, add another slice of
cornbread and a dab of Tabasco and you’ve got a meal.

Muffins: Banana Butterscotch- these muffins are some of the sweetest things ever
concocted, be ready by the salad bar when a warm and fresh batch comes out.
Three Cheese- three cheeses mixed together in this savory muffin, which is a
perfect compliment to the Red Chili

We look forward to sharing the charm of Estes Park and The Baldpate Inn in with you. Hopefully see you all later today.

Best Wishes,
Cory Meza, Front Desk

Monday - June 1st

Good morning everyone,

It's hard to believe that today marks the beginning of June. Although it looks to be a cloudy day here at the Baldpate, the warmth of the summer sun has been bringing an increasing number of beautiful days to the Estes Park area. This is my first post of the season and I will be serving as the Hotel Manager at the Baldpate for this season. I am coming to the Baldpate from the great state of Ohio where I am a student at the University of Dayton.

Soups of the day:

Garden Vegetable - A hearty soup for our vegetable lovers
White Chili - Baldpate's twist on traditional red chili

Muffins of the day:

Banana Butterscotch - One of my personal favorites at the Baldpate...sure to satisfy any sweet-tooth
Onion Garlic - A tasty combination that may seem intimidating at first, but pairs well with both of today's soups

As always, our Honey Wheat Bread and Cornbread will be on the menu as well.

If you would like to make reservations, give us a call at 970-586-6151 or toll-free at 866-577-5397. You can also make reservations for lunch or dinner on our website at http://www.baldpateinn.com/OT.asp

Have a great first day of June.

Take care,

Eric Knapke
