Origin Story: The Porcupine Hat

 Many of you may have seen the porcupine-spiked hat in our lobby, but you may not know the legend behind it.

As the story goes, the original owner of The Baldpate, Mr. Gordon Mace, had it in with a local porcupine who wouldn’t stay out of the kitchen. Finally, having had enough the shenanigans, Mr. Mace trapped the porcupine in his hat and threw it all the way to Estes Park. However, the porcupine lived on and traveled back to the Inn, leaving the hat at our doorstep…

This Wednesday, come learn about the American Frontier and how an elusive illness struck the Rocky Mountains. We will be hosting Madeline Anderson, one of the Baldpate Inn's Key Room Curators, for her talk A Brief History of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This talk will discuss the history of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, from its discovery to its long-sought treatment and all the strange characters that came through the Rocky Mountain Laboratories along the way.

Did you know there are as many as 40 mammals and around 300 species of birds that either call Rocky Mountain National Park home or migrate through?
