Powers has summited K2 and K4 (also known as Gasherbrum II) without the use of supplemental oxygen, worked in various non-profit organizations, authored two books, and been a National Outdoor Leadership School chief mountaineering instructor.

Despite being an expertly accomplished mountaineer on several continents, Powers suffered a considerable fall in 2011 that led him to reevaluate those lessons learned on K2 and K4 as well as to reconsider the balance between risk and return while on expedition.
